Getting Outside

We had another three-day weekend (this means we had a three-day weekend, a three-day work week, and then another three-day weekend!) and used it to get work done, have some down time, and get out on a little hike. Rowan is discovering that he has homework and needs to spend a bit of time at home in order to feel ready for school, North and I feel like we are treading water with work and wrapping our minds around eerything, and Talus is just stoked at all of the opportunities he has at school.

I am missing Bellingham this time of year-as the season starts to change a bit and I realize that there's a limited amount of days left to get into the mountains and when we do get in the mountains there's some crisp air in the early morning...So-hiking here is a different adventure! Last weekend we hiked at Kanching Falls a series of waterfalls that runs through the jungle, complete with the long tailed Macaques that are so interested in human food and ubiqitous around here. It was super busy because it was a holiday but we managed to drag the boys far enough up the mountain that we got away from the people and just experienced some quiet jungle. The water was cold and it felt good to scramble.

Lower down on the trail with some pools and bridges

Pausing for lunch-another hiker took this picture of us and airdropped it to North at the trailhead-she caught Rowan and I taking the selfie that is the picture to the right.

Today we stuck closer to home and went out near Desa ParkCity-a trendy complex where a lot of teachers and families from school live (and also where my dentist is). It was one of the places we looked at living when we started planning our move here. Glad we ended up in Valencia just for the ease of the commute to school and the running around of our children but Desa Park has a lot to offer; and access to trails is great. We hiked up Sri Bintang Hill-little bit of up, not too many people, and a cool view of the city (as well as some homemade exercise equipment up top) followed by an Indian breakfast with roti canai, mango laasi, and tosai masala.

Top of the first hill-city jungle behind us.

A good use of tires to help stabilize the steep hill and then a little playground up top.

Missing Trailhead for sure

We told Rowan he had to start smiling more for pictures because they are all going on the blog...he is trying...

Both boys started Everton (Football) and after school activities last week so we are feeling what the schedule is really like when Rowan and North have morning practice (6:30-7:30) two days a week, evening practice two days a week and Talus has afternoon practice two days a week...Games haven't started yet but they are enjoying the connections they are making with other kids as they play.

  1. Hey there you wonderful crew! We missed you greatly at Michael and Yaxue’s wedding! Been thinking lots about you and sending warm thoughts though. Life there sounds interesting and challenging, as we’ve experienced ourselves in different locations! Here, we’re just recovering from the intensity of organizing the wedding and the clean up that followed. The summer has vanished. Aspens are beginning to turn. Our wildflowers are fading but still beautiful. The evenings are getting dark earlier. We’re thinking of you and sending lots of love.

  3. Your news of further explorations, discoveries, realizations, and the demands of adapting always helps me feel like I'm tagging along with y'all :)
Love seeing the waterfalls, the trail enhancements and antics, smiling styles, the summit decor and the not so subtle message to keep exerting yourself!
Those boys are going to be some dang good fútbol players before you know it. I sense so much learning and growing for everyone, even though . . . Remember, those sore muscles and sleepy mornings are bound to be fruitful. 'Twill be fun to step onto that stellar looking pitch.
Kiss your brains, bodies, and hearts as you make your very own special history, oxox gb
